![]() ![]() One reviewer had it right: ‘Like Bryson, Ferguson is often as his best (and laugh-out-loud funniest) when most annoyed.’, such as when he realizes he’s the creepy old man in the youth hostel or when he gets trapped in a church during pilgrim ceremonies. (There’s a passage in Hitching Rides with Buddha that actually makes me tear up but that never happened in this book). ![]() There were plenty of sentences that made me grin while I was reading and there were plenty of sentences that made me feel rather sad and melancholic. The aspect of Ferguson’s books I love most is the way he can blend humour and serious reflection (that’s the best way I can think of to describe it…). Beyond Belfast, the story of his ambitious undertaking to walk the Ulster Way (a 560 mile path around Northern Ireland) will be released in soft-cover just before my birthday and I will definitely be putting it on my wishlist. Still have to read Beauty Tips from Moose Jaw and I’m sure I’ll get around to his fiction one day.Anyhow. The only other book I’ve read by him, aside from this one, is How to Be Canadian. My favourite book by Ferguson is Hitching Rides With Buddha. I’ve enjoyed him since we first studied Why I Hate Canadians in grade 11 history. ![]() Will Ferguson is a Canadian author known for his books about his travels and about Canadians. Reading tarot cards isn’t necessarily a moneymaker, and due to this, she is falling behind on bills and is being followed by a man who loaned her some money at a high interest rate. Ware does an excellent job of setting high stakes. When she is invited to a distant relative’s funeral, Hal spends practically all of her money traveling to the funeral in hopes of gaining a bit of inheritance. Westaway starts off with Hal, a young fortuneteller who is in desperate need of money. She calls the novel cinematic and engaging, and the best of Ware’s books so far. The good news is that the character work here is really well done, to the point at which I think they’re more memorable than the car itself. The car is a kind of catalyst, nothing more or less. Instead of being outright horrifying, it’s more of a slow, creeping sense of dread, as well as a sense that everything is going to take a turn for the worse, but in many ways, this is about the evil that people do and not the evil of a car. What I will say is that I was expecting it to be scarier. ![]() It’s got that classic Stephen King vibe to it, and I have no problem with him taking his time to tell a story, as long as it’s a good story. ![]() The good news is that Christine was a pretty decent read, even if it was a slow burner. Artist NotesĮdgar Allan Poe needs no introduction. We are thrilled to bring this masterpiece back to life with a new fine edition. Moreover, it is a good story - a page turner that hurtles toward a dramatic end. It is a story, in other words, for this political moment. It is a story of wealth and poverty, extravagance and hubris. The Masque of the Red Death tells the story of the rich and powerful, who cloister themselves away from the masses.
